The Time of Your Visitation
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” Luke 19:41-44 (ESV)
Jesus wept over Jerusalem because his people did not recognize who he was and rejected him as king. The leaders were blinded to the signs of the times. They could not see that their king had come and brought with him peace. They sought a leader who would defeat their Roman enemies and bring them glory. The thought that their enemy was the problem and that God would vindicate them. Jesus wept because they failed to see that they were the problem. Their failure to acknowledge Jesus as King meant that they would be ones judged by their enemies.
This is the danger that Christian are in today. We are too ready to blame others for the problems of our society and fail to see that the real problem is our own hypocrisy. Non-Christians are simply doing what unbelievers do. Christians should have pity for them for they do not know what they are doing. They are already suffering for their own immorality. Our society is not going from bad to worse because unbelievers are so how turning for the worst. The fault lies with us. We have become corrupt. We have tried to serve two masters and we have betrayed Jesus. We have failed to the salt to preserve our society.
